HOW DO YOU DO?
-Project Description-
Objective
The project is dedicated to all students of Asia and Europe who wish to broaden their horizons by learning each other’s history and culture through the English language which would ultimately help bridge the gap of the students in both regions. It aims to provide the average learners with information on basic words and phrases to enable them to understand and equip them in conversing with the Asian and European Communities.
Groups of 4-10 students from at least 2 participating schools will contribute to develop a phrasebook consisting of daily conversations. English expressions in certain selected situations will be used as a basis for student participants to translate them into their respective languages. Participant students will not only translate the expressions, but they also need to add alphabet system and pronunciation rules.
By carrying out the project, it is expected that participants do not only get a deep understanding about their mother tongue but also increase their command of English. Also, the understanding of Asian and European languages will help students to communicate with each other and help them to understand each other’s culture. Because this kind of project requires each group member’s cooperation, it is expected that this could influence each other in a positive way and raise the attitudes of learning with mutual cooperation
Project Description
Groups of 4-10 students from at least 2 participating schools will develop a phrasebook by doing several activities, as follows:
A) Translation
Given a series of daily conversation in English, students will translate them into their own native language. Besides, the students also need to equip the translations with audio or video material. During the phase, participants are able to share the background and situation that may occur during the conversation. They may talk about the customs, cultures and daily habit of their respective countries.
B) Identification of ‘Good’ and ‘Problematic’ areas and Discussion
Based on the given situation of the conversation, students are to share a cross cultural understanding by summarising a list of customs and/or habit of their respective countries that should or should not be done to avoid misunderstanding or even frictions that might happen when they interact each other.
Student participants will then take part in forum discussion on the existing situations.
C) Compare and Contrast
Based on the translation of the conversation uploaded by other members, student participants should prepare an analysis on the similarities and differences on the language features and trace back to the history of their own native language.
D) Sharing & Reflections
Students will then share about their experiences and difficulties faced during the translation. Students should also highlight how they have overcome the obstacles faced.
At the end, all student participants should conclude the project through reflections on the tasks and what they have learnt from the project. They will also reflect on the benefits of working with students from another country and the collaboration they had with them.
An internet-based platform will be available for the exchange to take place. The exchange includes interaction, posting of pictures, audio and video materials.
If possible, live chats will also be conducted to allow students to interact and discuss during implementation of the project.
Expected Contribution From Asian Schools/Students:

- Create a self-profile to introduce themselves
- Create a school profile
- Translate a series of daily conversation in English, into their own native language
- Summarize a list of custom and habit of their respective countries that should or should not be done to avoid misunderstanding or even frictions that might happen when they interact each other.
- Prepare a compare & contrast on the language features and trace back to the history of their own native language.
- Share on their experiences, problems faced and reflect on the project, their sharing and the collaboration with team partners from other countries.

Duration of Project:
4-5 months including planning, execution and evaluation of project.
Proposed Time Line
Week 1
a. Brief students on project (Task 1)
b. Students prepare photo and short introduction of themselves (which includes biodata such as age, birthday, hobbies, class, and email address) (Task 2)
Week 2
a. Students prepare photo and short introduction of their school (school profile) (Task 3)
Week 3
a. Students familiarize themselves with the ICT platform (Task 4)
b. Students upload photo and short introduction (Task 5)
c. Students upload their school profile (Task 6)
Week 4
a. Students prepare an alphabetic system and pronunciation rules of their native language and equip them with audio/video materials (Task 7)
b. Students upload Task 7 (Task 8)
Week 5 – 8
a. Students translate the daily conversation in English into their respective native language (Task 9)
b. Students record the translation/ create a video of translated conversation (Task 10)
c. Teacher goes through draft with each group with editing and improvements (Task 11)
Week 9
a. Students prepare a list of custom and habit of their respective countries that should or should not be done to avoid misunderstanding or even frictions that might happen when they interact each other. (Task 12)
b. Students to start forum discussion on the existing situations (Task 13)

Week 10

Week 11 – 14
a. Teams conduct a research to trace back the history of the language and find out how the language similar or different to a certain language (Task 15)
b. Teams to upload and share result of the research (Task 16)
c. Teacher goes through draft with each group with editing and improvements (Task 17)
Week 15
a. All teams to share about their experiences and difficulties faced during the implementation of the project. Students should also highlight how they have overcome the obstacles faced (Task 18)
Week 16
a. All teams to reflect on the tasks and what they have learnt from the project, on the benefits of working with students from another country and the collaboration they had with them. (Task 19)
